In 1989, two childhood friends from Omaha, Nebraska, teamed up to start a clothing line for boys. Les Kimmel and Bill Mullen (the real "Wes" and "Willy") were both working as sales reps for other clothing companies and were frustrated that they couldn't find "cool" clothes for their sons. Their solution was to start making their own clothes, and Wes and Willy was born. Originally, the two entrepreneurs got into business selling boys' shirts to surf shops on the east coast, but over the last 25 years, the company has grown exponentially.
Always cheeky in their marketing efforts, the team behind Wes and Willy uphold the motto that "boys need great clothes too." The brand's styles are dedicated to all the things boys love, including sports, dogs, and rock 'n' roll. In addition to being made from the softest possible fabrics, these garments are designed to last for years--withstanding all the abuse that active boys' clothes are subjected to on a daily basis. The company wants to make outfits that boys will want to keep wearing for as long as possible.
The Wes and Willy product line is divided into three categories: Jack Thomas, Collegiate, and the original Wes and Willy collection. The eponymous Wes and Willy line features tops like graphic tees, thermals, and hoodies. The prints on these shirts are anything but traditional. Wacky, witty, and perfect for boys, the clothes certainly have an attitude. Bottoms include jeans, cargo shorts, and mesh shorts as well as a broad selection of swim trunks with various prints.
The Jack Thomas collection was introduced in 2013, and its clothes are classic, preppy, and colorful. Made with the preteen market in mind, this line has a slightly higher price point. It includes options like button-down shirts, slacks, ties, corduroys, plaid pants, and more. Again, these styles are still slightly quirky and stand apart from other boys' prep wear. The final line from Wes and Willy is the Collegiate collection. It features clothes and accessories from your son's favorite college. 37 schools are represented, and the designs feature mascots and slogans. In addition to graphic tees (both short- and long-sleeved), you'll find jerseys, hoodies, pajama sets, and more. Whether your boy is starting to plan his future now or just wants to represent the local home team, it's easy to stock up on collegiate gear from Wes and Willy.
Too many brands in the fashion world take themselves very seriously, and that attitude rarely works when a company is making clothes for kids. Wes and Willy sets itself apart in everything from its designs to its company mottos to its marketing efforts. It's easy to see that the men behind Wes and Willy are dads of boys who understand how young boys' minds work. Though they infuse humor into many of their designs, however, they do so without sacrificing style. In fact, the boys' (and especially teens') clothes from Wes and Willy are some of the best looking products on the market for these age groups. One of the biggest concerns for parents of active boys is whether the clothes you buy will hold up, and this brand is committed to making garments that will "wear like iron." On the whole, we give Wes and Willy 5 out of 5 stars.
