The idea for Under Armour was born on the football field. Founder Kevin Plank was the special teams captain for the University of Maryland in 1995, and he was fed up with needing to change his cotton t-shirt several times a day during the season because it would get soaked in sweat. After he graduated, Plank set out to design a new moisture wicking shirt that would stay light and dry no matter what conditions it was subjected to. He maxed out his credit cards designing and building a prototype, but within a year, he had successfully created the first Under Armour HeatGear t-shirt. After selling his products to one football team, word began to spread, and soon the demand for Under Armour products was so great that Plank set up headquarters in Baltimore.

In the late '90s, Under Armour officially became a household name when filmmakers opted to use the brand's shirts in two major Hollywood blockbusters, Any Given Sunday and The Replacements. Following the company's success in the wake of these movies, it officially formed partnerships with Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League. Under Armour expanded its product lines to include choices for women and kids in the early 2000s, and the company officially went public in 2005. Over the last decade, the brand has been endorsed by major athletes, including Lindsey Vonn, Ray Lewis, Tom Brady, and Michael Phelps. Its products are represented in almost every professional sport played around the world.
