Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, the founder of apparel company Tommy Hilfiger, was an entrepreneur early in his life. With a $150 inversion, a young Hilfiger opened a small chain of stores he called People’s Place while still in High School, in 1969. His intention was to bring the latest trends to upstate New York.
In 1985, with help from businessman Mohan Murjani, Hilfiger launched his first collection consisting of modernized chinos, button-down shirts and other classic attire.
Early in his career, the designer and entrepreneur received recognition for his work from different fashion and media outlets. In 1995, the Council of Fashion Designers of America named Hilfiger “Menswear Designer of the Year”. VH1 presented Hilfiger its “From the Catwalk to the Sidewalk” award that same year during its annual Fashion and Music Awards. In 1988 he received the Designer of the Year award presented by the Parsons School of Design in New York City.
Hilfiger philanthropic contributions earned the designer the UNESCO Support Award in 2009.
Hilfiger sold his company in 2006 to a private investment company and Phillips-Van Heusen, owner of Calvin Klein, bought the company from its previous owner in 2010.
Tommy Hilfiger offers classic, preppy apparel with a twist. The company has redesigned and refined classic looks like chinos and button-downs to give them a new, fresh look with a very American aesthetic. Tommy Hilfiger's design incorporate a number of Americana motives, such as red, white and blue, starts and stripes and plaid and other classic American looks.
The children’s line of Tommy Hilfiger is a smaller version of its adult styles. The little boy and girl lines cover sizes 3 months to 4T, while its Big Boy and Girl lines extends from 4T to 18 years old. Hilfiger outfits its younger clients with colorful pants, cargo pants and shorts, button-down shirts, polos, dresses and rompers made especially for a cool, clean and preppy look and a full line of denim with jeans, vests, jean jackets and shorts.
The new Spring 2014 collection sports a nautical feel with stripes, ocean motifs, seaside pastels and whimsical florals.
With an ample selection of whimsical, fun and classic looks, Tommy Hilfiger line of children’s clothing has something for every taste and occasion. The classic designs of Hilfiger’s polo and tank dresses and the brand’s button-down shirts and polo shirts make the clothes timeless, always a great feature in our eyes.
Tommy Hilfiger has always put philanthropy at the forefront of its business plans. Tommy Cares is the brand’s philanthropic group, which provides funding for a variety of causes around the globe, such as autism awareness and research and education and healthcare initiatives.
Hilfiger supports the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Breast Health International and the Millennium Promise, a non-profit organization that fights extreme poverty in the world.
Millennium Promise named Hilfiger, in 2010, the first Millennium Promise MGD global leader for its contributions and participation to the organization.

You'll also find tees, tanks, v-necks, and blouses that generally emphasize a sophisticated casual look. Sweaters are available in styles like pullovers, v-necks, cardigans, and shawls. Tommy Hilfiger dresses run the gamut from relatively casual to very dressy. Styles include maxi dresses, shift dresses, cap sleeve dresses, fit-and-flare dresses, and wrap dresses.

Tommy Hilfiger has garnered a reputation as one of the top brands of preppy clothing in the country, so it's often a go-to for consumers looking for classic, slightly upscale apparel. The women's collection, in particular, includes plenty of options with relatively simple colors and patterns, as well as the clean lines that are a hallmark of the brand. The line is basically all-inclusive, so it's easy to find the items that suit your sense of style, and then mix and match them to build outfits from the bottom up. Tommy Hilfiger apparel certainly isn't cheap--but its higher price tags do correlate to excellent quality. Beyond its apparel, the brand's philanthropic efforts are also very admirable. We give Tommy Hilfiger 4.5 stars out of 5.
