Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, the founder of apparel company Tommy Hilfiger, was an entrepreneur early in his life. With a $150 inversion, a young Hilfiger opened a small chain of stores he called People’s Place while still in High School, in 1969. His intention was to bring the latest trends to upstate New York.
In 1985, with help from businessman Mohan Murjani, Hilfiger launched his first collection consisting of modernized chinos, button-down shirts and other classic attire.
Early in his career, the designer and entrepreneur received recognition for his work from different fashion and media outlets. In 1995, the Council of Fashion Designers of America named Hilfiger “Menswear Designer of the Year”. VH1 presented Hilfiger its “From the Catwalk to the Sidewalk” award that same year during its annual Fashion and Music Awards. In 1988 he received the Designer of the Year award presented by the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

Hilfiger philanthropic contributions earned the designer the UNESCO Support Award in 2009.

Hilfiger sold his company in 2006 to a private investment company and Phillips-Van Heusen, owner of Calvin Klein, bought the company from its previous owner in 2010.
