The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first introduced in 1984 in a comic book published by Mirage Studios. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the characters during a brainstorming session and originally only intended to publish a single-issue comic that parodied some of the other top properties in the genre. Two years later, a licensing agent sought out the two artists with a proposal for wider merchandising opportunities including action figures and a TV miniseries. In 1987, the characters found their audience, and the hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV show began to air on CBS. The turtles themselves also became a pop culture craze, and their likenesses were featured on all sorts of merchandise. The original series ran for 10 years and spawned several full-length motion pictures.

Though it has occasionally lain dormant for short periods of time, the franchise has always bounced back with new TV shows and movies. In 2012, the rights to the characters were acquired by Nickelodeon, which began to air a new computer-animated series and produced a hit movie in 2014. The four main characters have remained constant through every incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (often abbreviated TMNT) saga. Named after famous Renaissance artists, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello are anthropomorphic turtles who fight crime in New York City and love to eat pizza.
