In 1992, American footwear mogul Robert Greenberg left his job at L.A. Gear and founded Skechers with his son Michael. Though the new company was originally intended to simply act as a stateside distribution liaison for the British shoe brand Dr. Martens, the Greenbergs also decided to create a line of men's skate shoes that could compete in a market that was mostly dominated by Nike. Within a year of the company forming, Skechers had a falling out with R. Griggs, Ltd.--the makers of Dr. Martens--and was left to rely on its own shoes to stay afloat.
Skechers began to thrive in the mid-'90s, and it diversified its product line to appeal to a wider demographic. The brand was soon successful enough domestically that it branched out into international distribution. In 1999, Skechers went public and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Today, the company's shoes and apparel are available in more than 120 countries across the globe. Skechers has designed more than 3,000 different styles of shoes, and the brand operates more than 1,100 retail stores. Based in Manhattan Beach, CA, Skechers partners with major celebrities and athletes for promotional purposes.
Babies & Kids Merchandise
Skechers shoes for men, women, and children are essentially divided into two categories. The brand's athletic shoes are built to provide support for active endeavors. They run the gamut in terms of sizes, and you can find Skechers sneakers for infants, toddlers, kids, teens, and adults. Specialty categories among these athletic shoes include running, walking, training, and skate shoes. The other major category of shoes is the brand's lifestyle footwear. Options include casual shoes for everyday wear, such as slip-on shoes, high-tops, loafers, memory foam shoes, and clogs. Skechers also makes boots that are both functional and fashionable. Many of the kids' versions of these shoes light up with each step tots take. A sub-brand specific to women is Bobs loafers--a lightweight lifestyle shoe that supports charity with every purchase.
Beyond shoes, you'll also find that Skechers has several options for apparel and accessories. For boys and girls, the brand makes comfortable athletic socks. The women's apparel selection is much more thorough and includes activewear options like moisture-wicking tops, bra tops, tanks, sports bras, running shorts, yoga pants, athletic capris, skirts, skorts, running jackets, and more. You can also find Skechers accessories, including hats, backpacks, and lunchboxes.
The wide array of footwear options from Skechers helps ensure that both kids and adults can find the perfect shoes in a number of different categories. Shoes for boys and girls, in particular, are fun to wear in addition to being comfortable, and they feature bright pops of color that little ones will love. Adults, too, can find shoes that show off their personalities, and the brand's shoes run the gamut from loud to more muted. Skechers is constantly working to improve its footwear technology to make shoes as comfortable as possible without ever sacrificing style. The brand's apparel selection is relatively limited, but the women's options it does have are great for athletic wear. We give Skechers 4 stars out of 5.
