Sesame Street Toys, DVDs & Merchandise at Discount Prices
In 1966, the idea for Sesame Street was born when television producer Joan Ganz Cooney and vice president of the Carnegie Foundation, Lloyd Morrissett, tried to come up with a way to harness the addictive qualities of television into a format that would be educational for young kids. The duo worked with child psychologists and other experts to develop a style of show that would hold the attention spans of young people--which would later become known as the CTW model. After years of development, Sesame Street premiered in 1969 and became a success almost immediately.
Over the last 45 years, Sesame Street has undergone relatively few changes. Muppet characters like Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and Elmo remain as popular as ever, though the cast of human characters has changed through the show's epic run. Education has always been at the forefront of Sesame Street's mission, but producers make sure to keep kids (and their parents) entertained as well. The format of the show revolves around the live-action street scenes interspersed with animated and live-action shorts. Facing competition from cable and changing viewing habits among kids, Sesame Street evolved slightly around the beginning of the 21st century to be more of a narrative series and started to include ongoing storylines. Throughout its run, Sesame Street has received more than 120 Emmy Awards--more than any other TV show in history--and has taught millions of kids about important topics like diversity, conflict resolution, and helping others.
