American fashion designer Rachel Roy founded her eponymous collection in 2005 after working as creative director at Rocawear for a number of years. Her new brand was designed to embody modern sophistication and glamour, and it earned her a spot on the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2008, Jones Apparel Group entered into a partnership with Rachel Roy to further develop her brand. The joint venture was sold at high-end department stores like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman, though it has since been discontinued.

In 2009, Roy expanded her partnership with Jones Apparel Group to launch RACHEL Rachel Roy--an exclusive diffusion brand sold at Macy's stores across the country. The designer created the new line with her younger sister in mind and wanted to express urban youthfulness with a brand that paired downtown cool with uptown chic. The accessible fashion line has been a big success at Macy's. The retailer sells RACHEL Rachel Roy alongside its long list of exclusive brands and major name brands. Macy's currently operates more than 850 stores in addition to having a strong e-commerce presence. Jones Apparel Group was recently acquired by Sycamore Partners and renamed Nine West Holdings, but it still has a hand in the Rachel Roy brands.

Products

Some garments from the discontinued Rachel Roy line continue to be available via resale, and the collection included dresses and tops that were just offbeat enough that they are never likely to go out of style. Currently, however, the RACHEL Rachel Roy line is still available from Macy's. Dresses from the brand include sweatshirt dresses, halter dresses, maxi dresses, bodycon dresses, shift dresses, and more. Stylistic choices are very bold, and many designs feature several contrasting color blocks and patterns on one garment. In tops, the collection features blouses, tanks, camis, tunics, tees, sweatshirts, crop tops, V-necks, and more. Sweaters, cardigans, and sweatshirts are available as light outerwear. RACHEL Rachel Roy also offers bomber jackets, trenches, leather jackets, blazers, and cropped jackets for stylish protection from the elements.

Though the brand focuses more on tops than bottoms, you'll find a limited selection of skinny jeans in unique colors and featuring an array of washes. RACHEL Rachel Roy also makes skirts with offbeat patterns. Options for full outfits include bright jumpsuits and rompers that make a statement. Beyond regular apparel, the collection also features jewelry like necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Many of these pieces are available bundled together in themed sets.

Swap.com's Rating of Rachel Roy

Rachel Roy certainly approached her exclusive collection for Macy's without much regard for convention. Though the actual fits of the clothes are relatively traditional, the same cannot be said about the colors, patterns, and prints they sport. Roy has an affinity for asymmetry that ensures these outfits will stand out simply because they will take most observers by surprise. If you are looking to make a splash with your apparel choices, then you won't find many brands bolder than this one. On the other hand, women who prefer to blend into the crowd will likely hate most of the brand's options. It's refreshing to see a major retailer like Macy's embracing such a polarizing designer, and you can be sure the clothes sport high-quality construction. On the whole, we give Rachel Roy 4 stars out of 5.
