In 1969, Australian entrepreneurs Alan Green and John Law founded Quicksilver in Torquay, Victoria. The duo initially made wetsuits, but they started to make a name for themselves when they introduced their first boardshorts in 1973--integrating the latest advancements in design technology. Within a few years, demand for Quicksilver boardshorts was off the charts among professional surfers, and the brand was worn by several champion athletes. In 1976, retired surfer Jeff Hackman immigrated to the United States and teamed up with Bob McKnight to distribute Quiksilver products in America. Headquarters for the company eventually moved to Huntington Beach, California.
Quiksilver underwent massive expansion during the late '70s and '80s, and the brand continued to venture into new markets across the globe. The company launched the Roxy brand for women in 1993, which became very successful on its own. It also began to diversify into snowboarding apparel to complement its surf gear. Quiksilver encountered financial difficulties in the early 2010s, and it declared bankruptcy in late 2015. After some massive restructuring, however, the brand has started to take steps toward becoming financially viable once more. Products continue to be sold at Quiksilver stores and outlets, as well as via authorized dealers.
Since the Roxy brand is devoted to girls' and women's apparel, Quiksilver puts its focus on boys and men. The kids collection is divided into several different age categories, including 6-24 months, 2-4 years, 4-7 years, and 8-16 years. Some garments are universal and are available for kids of all ages, and the brand's most popular apparel options include swimwear products like boardshorts and swim trunks. Other clothes are simply designed for casualwear--especially on the beach. In tops, you'll find graphic tees, tanks, and long-sleeved shirts, as well as sweatshirts and hoodies for slightly cooler temperatures. The brand's bottoms include sweatpants, track pants, jeans, cargo shorts, and Bermuda shorts.
In addition to its regular clothing selection, Quiksilver also features a surf shop and a snow shop that offer the equipment needed for surfing and snowboarding. Surfing apparel includes wetsuits and rashguards, which can be worn alongside the company's boardshorts. Popular snow gear options include jackets, snowpants, bib pants, beanies, gloves, mittens, and full snowsuits. Quiksilver also makes lots of accessories, such as backpacks, hats, and skateboards, and you can choose from a wide array of flip-flops to wear at the beach.
Even if Quiksilver isn't experiencing the same sales heyday that it had during the late 20th century, there will always be a demand for quality surf and snow apparel--so you can be almost certain that the brand isn't going away any time soon. Just as they were among the most revolutionary products when they were first introduced in the 1970s, the company's boardshorts continue to drive its progress today. Across the globe, Quiksilver is known as one of the best manufacturers in its niche, and it continues to integrate new technology and stylistic advancements. Quiksilver is already a relatively affordable brand, which makes it an even better choice to buy via consignment. We give Quiksilver 4 stars out of 5.
