The Oh Baby by Motherhood brand of clothes is an exclusive maternity line created for distribution at Kohl's by the manufacturing giant Destination Maternity. The history of Destination Maternity began in 1981 when 28-year-old founder Rebecca Matthias was pregnant with her first child. Frustrated because she had trouble finding maternity apparel that was appropriate to wear to work, Matthias started a mail-order business that she called Mothers Work (the company name wouldn't be changed to Destination Maternity until 2008). After expanding and diversifying throughout the 1980s and '90s, Mothers Work acquired two of its competitors: A Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity.

In 2005, Mothers Work announced that it had entered into a partnership with Kohl's, through which it would license out one of its company names and manufacture the new maternity line called Oh Baby by Motherhood. The new brand would completely replace the existing Kohl's maternity line in more than 600 stores across the country. The Kohl's Corporation, which has been operating department stores since 1962, is a Fortune 500 company and holds the distinction of being one of the largest retail chains in the country.
