When cable television first started coming to prominence in the late 1970s, the series Pinwheel was broadcast exclusively on a channel simply known as C-3. From these humble beginnings, Nickelodeon was born in 1979. After launching in Buffalo, New York, the cable channel quickly expanded to other markets. The company struggled at first and had trouble surviving its introductory decade, but by 1990, the channel had found its audience and hit its stride. In the early '90s, Nickelodeon premiered several original animated series--including Rugrats, Doug, and The Ren & Stimpy Show under its new "Nicktoons" banner. In addition to wildly successful animation, the channel also aired live-action TV shows like All That, Clarissa Explains It All, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
Nickelodeon expanded its cable offerings by launching the spinoff channels Nick Jr., TeenNick, and Nicktoons. This diversification coincided with a drop in the company's popularity, however, and cutbacks were needed to keep the channels afloat. More recently, popular shows have included iCarly, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Big Time Rush, and the long-running SpongeBob SquarePants. Nickelodeon went through a major re-branding in 2009, but the TV channel is still struggling to regain its former status as the highest-rated network on cable.
Fans of the current Nickelodeon lineup can find a wide selection of toys based on their favorite shows. Dolls, figurines, and playsets featuring characters from Dora the Explorer and Victorious are big hits among younger kids. You'll also find plush toys based off series like Max & Ruby, Ni Hao, Kai Lan, and Wonder Pets. Lego sets, video games, and more are also available for some of the network's hottest properties, such as Bubble Guppies and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Nickelodeon merchandise lineup goes well beyond toys, and it includes plenty of apparel choices as well. Options like graphic tees, hats, socks, pajamas, underwear, sneakers, and costumes represent the company's current shows as well as several of its past offerings. Since nostalgia is a major part of the channel's brand, many of these clothes are available in sizes for adults and older kids in addition to the target demographic. Properties like SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer, which have been around for many years, have diverse product lines to complement their histories. You can even find options like home décor and furniture based off of these shows--perfect for your child's room or playroom.
Many of today's parents actually grew up watching Nickelodeon themselves, and they can enjoy passing the channel's legacy onto their kids. Even if you don't have a personal connection to this cable network, however, your little one is still likely to fall in love with one or more of the TV shows that it airs. Luckily, Nickelodeon has always been committed to producing age-appropriate programming that will connect with kids on their level. It only makes sense that your tot would want to continue his or her interactions with favorite characters off the screen, and the wide selection of official and licensed Nickelodeon merchandise allows children to do just that. From apparel to toys to school supplies to home décor, it's easy for you to find products that your youngster will love. We give Nickelodeon 4 out of 5 stars.
