Nick Jr.
A subdivision of the popular TV channel Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. is geared primarily toward kids between the ages of 2 and 6. The precursor to Nickelodeon, known as Pinwheel, was launched by Warner Communications in 1977 as a block of children's programming. In 1979, it was spun off into its own cable channel with original series and TV specials for the whole family to enjoy. After it was sold to Viacom, the channel began to air a programming block each morning called Nick Jr., which was aimed at preschool-age children.
The Nick Jr. block featured several successful kids' programs during the '90s and early 2000s, including shows like Blues Clues, Gullah Gullah Island, and Bob the Builder. Nickelodeon launched several new channels in the early 2000s, and its new Noggin network was used to air programming for preschoolers 24/7. To help align this popular network with the rest of the brand, Noggin was renamed Nick Jr. in 2009. The channel has broadcast many popular and long-running children's shows, including Dora the Explorer, Max & Ruby, Wonder Pets!, Paw Patrol, Yo Gabba Gabba, and more. A Nick Jr. programming block still remains on the original Nickelodeon channel as well, and some of the same series are aired on both networks.
