NFL Team Apparel
The rules of American football were first written down in the 1870s after the game was derived from rugby. Originally played in local athletic clubs, rare players began signing professional contracts in the late 1890s. Even so, it wasn't until 1920 that the American Professional Football Association--the first professional league--was formed. After just two years, the APFA dissolved and reorganized itself into the National Football League (or NFL) that still exists today. At first, professional football wasn't much of a draw for crowds, but by the end of World War II, fans had started paying attention to the league.
The 1960s brought competition for players from the American Football League, which was established as a unique organization, but the NFL and AFL decided to merge in 1970. The last few decades of the 20th century saw the NFL turn football into the top spectator sport in the country, with enormous television viewing audiences tuning in weekly throughout the season to watch their favorite teams. Today, there are 32 different franchises in the NFL--split evenly between the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). The 17-week season and three rounds of playoffs culminate in the Super Bowl, which is the most-watched televised event around the world. NFL team apparel is made by licensed manufacturers, and fans are easily able to find clothing and accessories to represent their favorite teams.
