Lerner Shops was founded in 1918 by Samuel Lerner and Harold Lane. After starting their first store in New York, the duo expanded their venture quickly and opened 18 more stores within a year. By 1930, the company had a presence coast to coast and continued to thrive for the next several decades. Limited Brands acquired almost 800 Lerner stores in 1985 and held the brand for the next 17 years. Under its new ownership, the name of the line was changed to Lerner New York in 1992 before being re-branded as New York & Company in 1995.

In 2002, New York & Company parted ways with Limited Brands to become an independent company, and it went public under the ticker symbol NYW in 2004. Since venturing out on its own, the company opened a new flagship store in New York City's fashion district in addition to launching an e-commerce presence. Today, there are about 500 New York & Company stores across the country in addition to several New York & Company outlets in major markets. The brand is committed to bringing the excitement of cosmopolitan style to the rest of the world while also helping women look great and feel confident about themselves.
