The company currently knows as Nautica Enterprises, Inc. has a rich history that has spanned almost 50 years and crossed the entire country. In 1966, the California-based manufacturer and distributor known as Pacific Coast Knitting Mills began producing double-knit fabrics. The company moved its operations all the way to the east coast in 1972, however, when it acquired a men's sportswear company called State-O-Maine. Meanwhile, a Taiwanese clothing designer named David Chu had started a company called Nautica in 1983. One of the top executives at State-O-Maine, David Sanders, facilitated a merger between his company and Nautica, and Sanders and Chu devised a plan to get their products into major department stores around New York City.
Through distribution deals with companies like Dillard's, Bloomingdale's, and Nordstrom, Nautica sales took off, and in 1994, State-O-Maine officially was renamed as Nautica Enterprises, Inc. The company continues to offer clothing and other textiles through department stores as well as through its own retail outlets. In 2003, Nautica was acquired by the American clothing giant, the VF Corporation. Nautica is one of VF's only sportswear brands, and it continues to produce high-quality clothes that are inspired by a nautical theme.
Nautica's clothes for kids include active wear and sportswear that starts in infant and toddler sizes and ranges up to sizes for kids, teens, and adults. Infant clothes include a limited selection of t-shirt and shorts sets. Moving into outfits fro toddlers and kids, however, you can find a wide range of styles. Choose among polos, tees, shirts, sweaters, dresses, rompers, skirts, jeans, pants, and more. Nautica also features unique categories for activewear--which includes options like athletic shirts, track shorts, and hoodies--as well as outerwear, featuring jackets designed for sports and for fashion. The brand's shoes include ocean-themed options like flip-flops, boat shoes, and more.
Older kids and teens will find a number of unique items in adult sizes. In addition to many of the same styles you'll find for kids, women's clothes include blazers, loungewear, tank tops, and pajama sets while men can choose suits, boxers, and more. You can also find accessories such as sunglasses, fragrance, belts, ties, wallets, bags, and jewelry. The Nautica home collection features bedding and bath necessities like towels, comforter sets, sheets, pillowcases, quilts, and throw pillows.
After a very nontraditional growth period, Nautica has firmly established itself as one of the leading lifestyle brands in America over the last decade. Its styles evoke a very classic feel, and the range of clothes ensures that you'll be able to find an outfit for a day at the beach as well as one for a formal occasion. Most of the kids' options from Nautica aren't particularly flashy, but their fabrics and manufacturing techniques ensure that they are built to last. The company is committed to preserving the environment with a number of sustainability initiatives. It also has made some major strides in bringing fresh water to third-world countries through a partnership with Charity: Water. With the power of the VF Corporation behind it, it's safe to say that Nautica will be producing quality apparel for many years. We give the company 4.5 out of 5 stars.
