The company currently knows as Nautica Enterprises, Inc. has a rich history that has spanned almost 50 years and crossed the entire country. In 1966, the California-based manufacturer and distributor known as Pacific Coast Knitting Mills began producing double-knit fabrics. The company moved its operations all the way to the east coast in 1972, however, when it acquired a men's sportswear company called State-O-Maine. Meanwhile, a Taiwanese clothing designer named David Chu had started a company called Nautica in 1983. One of the top executives at State-O-Maine, David Sanders, facilitated a merger between his company and Nautica, and Sanders and Chu devised a plan to get their products into major department stores around New York City.

Through distribution deals with companies like Dillard's, Bloomingdale's, and Nordstrom, Nautica sales took off, and in 1994, State-O-Maine officially was renamed as Nautica Enterprises, Inc. The company continues to offer clothing and other textiles through department stores as well as through its own retail outlets. In 2003, Nautica was acquired by the American clothing giant, the VF Corporation. Nautica is one of VF's only sportswear brands, and it continues to produce high-quality clothes that are inspired by a nautical theme.
