Mattel created the Monster High franchise in 2010 by releasing a series of dolls that are based on classic characters from the thriller, science fiction, and horror genres. The characters were designed by Garrett Sander, Kellee Riley, and Glen Hanson. According to the premise, Monster High is a high school in New Salem, OR, and the children of some of the most infamous monsters in history attend. Female characters are called Ghouls and male characters are known as Mansters. Examples of some of the students include Clawdeen Wolf, Cleo de Nile, Draculaura, Frankie Stein, and Ghoulia Yelps.
Since so much thought went into creating the backstory for the Monster High dolls, Mattel expanded the franchise beyond just toys. Webisodes about the lives of the characters are frequently released on the Monster High website, and there have been several TV specials aired on Nickelodeon. Monster High books and video games are also popular among fans of the characters. A full-length movie musical is currently in development from Universal Pictures. The message behind Monster High is very positive for its young fans. The school encourages its students to accept each other for their differences, and the franchise's stories revolve around awkward teenage moments that are universal. The slogan for Monster High is "Be Yourself. Be Unique. Be a Monster."
The Monster High dolls were the first products created to define the franchise. Standing at approximately 10 inches tall, these dolls each have plenty of personality. They are defined by their signature looks, their unique skin tones, and their array of accessories. Kids might collect several different dolls of their favorite characters so that they can enjoy multiple outfits. You can also find dollhouses and play sets specifically modeled after the locations in the web series and TV specials--including Monster High itself. In addition to the dolls, vinyl figures of the characters are available for displaying and playing with.
Books featuring the Monster High characters range from junior novels to graphic novels. Kids can also enjoy the interactivity of products like sticker books and coloring books. Monster High video games are available for consoles and portable gaming systems. Fans of the franchise can show off their love of the characters by sporting clothes with Monster High prints, and you'll find graphic tees and sweatshirts in girls' sizes. Home décor products like bedding sets, pillows, and folding chairs are also available.
Mattel took a risk by creating a new franchise that wasn't based on an existing property, and it paid off with the incredible success of Monster High. In fact, other toy manufacturers soon copied the move and infiltrated the market with similar dolls and toys. Monster High is a little quirky in comparison to other fashion dolls because of its characters' connection with the horror genre, but fans of the franchise don't seem to mind. In fact, the uniqueness of the characters paves the way for its important "be yourself" message--which all young girls should learn. We give Monster High 4 stars out of 5.
