In 1991, after his career as a stock broker didn’t pan out, Johnnie Boden started selling men’s clothes from his West London apartment. The English brand initially carried just 8 menswear products and by 1992 Boden launched its first line of women apparel, which was closely followed by Mini Boden in 1996.

Boden initially was a mail order company and in 1999 the company started selling its clothes online at www.boden.co.uk. The success of the brand in the United States, which accounts for one third of the company’s total sales, prompted the introduction of the American website, www.bodenusa.com in 2002.

As the company expanded its presence to international markets, it also introduced some new lines with a brand for teenagers up to 16 years old called ‘Johnnie B’ in 2010, a maternity line in 2011 and even a limited Mini Boden party dress line with formal attire for young kids for special occasions.

Boden is set to continue expanding to international markets with an expansion over to the Australian market and further presence in Europe, where it currently operates out of England and Germany.

To ensure proper working conditions in every factory where Boden clothes are manufactured, the company has adopted the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code, based on the International Labor Organization conventions on working standards. Boden also has a strict policy banning child labor and ensuring favorable factory working conditions in all its manufacturing facilities around the world.
