New England brothers Bert and John Jacobs first entered the clothing industry in 1989 when they designed a t-shirt and took their products on the road. After years of very limited success, they decided to print a line of shirts with a smiling character named Jake and the simple slogan "Life is good." These shirts were an immediate hit, and the company soon started to take off locally and nationally.
