In the late 1920s, Rene Lacoste was an international tennis sensation. A member of the famous French team known as the "Musketeers," the player scored multiple wins at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the French Open. At the height of his career, Lacoste had designed a number of revolutionary tennis shirts to wear on the court. Made of a mesh material that absorbed perspiration and allowed for better freedom of movement, his homemade fashion started a sensation. In 1933, Lacoste teamed up with French knitwear manufacturer Andre Gillier to produce his tennis shirts for a mass market. Since Lacoste had earned the nickname "the Crocodile" for his tenacious playing style, he decided to embroider a crocodile logo on all of his company's products.

As Lacoste's company--which was originally named "La Chemise Lacoste"--began the grow, the manufacturer branched out from tennis clothes, and it started producing shirts for sports like golf and sailing. The company began exporting shirts to the United States in the 1950s, and it gained a reputation as an upper-class, "preppy" brand in the latter half of the 20th century. Though Rene Lacoste died in 1996, he transferred ownership of his global empire to his son, and the company stayed in the family until 2012 when it was bought by the Swiss holding company Maus Freres. Today, Lacoste products are sold around the world, and the company is as popular as ever due to endorsement contracts with athletes like Andy Roddick, John Isner, and Jose Maria Olazabal.
