The Joe Boxer brand was founded in 1985 by failing punk-rock front man Nicholas Graham. Throughout its early years, the main garment manufactured by the company was, in fact, boxer shorts. Graham spiced up this men's staple by promoting designs that were humorous and fun to wear. Since Graham didn't have much business acumen, his company went through several periods of financial turmoil--including almost going bankrupt in the year 2000--but it was able to bounce back when the company signed an exclusive distribution deal with Sears Holdings (the parent of both Sears and Kmart). Today, Joe Boxer is a subsidiary of the Iconix Brand Group. Though it continues to manufacture men's underwear, it has expanded its product line to include clothes for women and children as well.
Sears, Roebuck, and Company was established back in 1893 and enjoyed many successful years as a mail-order catalog before transitioning into a department store. Kmart was founded in 1912 and grew into one of the world's largest discount retailers. Both companies were floundering, however, by the early 2000s, so Kmart bought out Sears in 2005 to save the two brands. The new parent corporation was renamed Sears Holdings, and it currently owns and operates more than 4,000 retail locations across the country. In addition to selling major brand names, the two stores also feature a number of exclusive brands.
Joe Boxer's clothes for babies and toddlers mostly include sleepwear and swimwear. You'll find a number of pajama sets (including footed pajamas, sweatpants, leggings, T-shirts, and more) as well as one- and two-piece swimsuits for baby girls and swim trunks for boys. Moving up into the categories for slightly older boys and girls, pajamas continue to be the number one option sold by the brand. Pajama pants, shirts, and thermals are popular for boys, while the top girls' options include flannel pajama sets, robes, and shorts. All Joe Boxer kids' designs feature bright colors, patterns, and/or prints of the company's original cartoon characters. Unsurprisingly, the other kids' garments Joe Boxer specializes in include underwear, bras, and socks. You can find boxers and briefs for boys as well as boy shorts, briefs, panties, training bras, and sports bras for girls. The brand also makes
Juniors' sizes for older girls include a wider variety of options. In addition to underwear, swimwear, and sleepwear, the brand also specializes in yoga pans and capris, tank tops, loungewear, skirts, thermals, and more. Men's styles include cargo shorts, boardshorts, and graphic tees in addition to the brand's staples. undershirts for both genders.
Before Joe Boxer, underwear was considered a relatively taboo category of apparel, but the company broke that mold by finding a way to make boxers fun. Even after so many ups and downs through the years, this brand has found a way to stay true to its original spirit, and its diversified line of products has filled a niche for high-quality underwear, swimwear, and sleepwear in addition to its other offerings. Currently manufactured by the Iconix Brand Group, the company has very strong and established ownership behind it, which helps ensure that quality is a top consideration. We give Joe Boxer 4.5 stars out of 5.
