Offering classic children's designs at more than 130 retail stores across the country, Janie and Jack is one of the subsidiary brands owned by the Gymboree Corporation. The parent company was founded in 1976 as Gymboree Play & Music. After running its kids' music and activity centers for a decade, the company expanded and opened its first Gymboree store to sell children's apparel. Today, the company owns and operates more the 1200 retail stores worldwide under the Gymboree, Gymboree Outlet, Janie and Jack, and Crazy 8 brands. It also continues to run developmental play programs for kids and their parents at more than 600 Gymboree Play & Music locations in more than 30 different countries. Janie and Jack offers luxurious outfits for kids up to size 12, and many of the styles feature quality accents like hand-embroidery and special prints. The Gymboree Corporation was acquired for $1.8 billion by investment giant Bain Capital in 2010.
Janie and Jack separates its catalog of kids clothes into categories for layettes, girls' clothes, boys' clothes, and outfits for special occasions. Layettes are available in complete sets and individual pieces for babies of both genders. Sets have specific themes like "Sweet Pansies" and "Little Darling" for girls and "Seaside Picnic" and "Little Sailor" for boys. The brand also makes unisex layette options in gender-neutral colors like white and grey. Components include bodysuits, one-pieces, overalls, hats, jumpers, sweaters, dresses, swimwear, bibs, socks, hats, blankets, plush toys, and more. No matter whether you are dressing your baby for a day out or a comfortable night at home, the layette sets from Janie and Jack offer all the components you'll need.
Moving into clothes for toddlers and kids, Janie and Jack's girls and boys collections include complete outfits as well as individual components. Options include tops, cardigans, pullovers, polos, henleys, coats, shorts, overalls, skirts, pants, capris, leggings, jeans, dresses, jumpers, rompers, pajamas, swimwear, shoes, and accessories. All these textiles are made with high-quality fabrics that will add a touch of class to your tot's wardrobe. Special occasion clothes for girls include silk and lace dresses, ballet flats, headbands, tights, and purses. Options for boys run the gamut from dress shirts and ties to full suits.
The outfits for babies, toddlers, and kids available from Janie and Jack are designed in a completely different vein from those you'll find at sister stores like Gymboree. These clothes are meant to exude luxury, though many pieces are actually priced affordably. Still, only you will know if this style matches your child's personality. While many young children will love the preppy look of Janie and Jack, others will feel that it is too stuffy.
Regardless of how you feel about the brand's classic styles, there is no denying that the Gymboree Corporation is doing some excellent work behind the scenes. Janie and Jack has a proud collaboration with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital that has raised more than $3 million since 2006. The company has also supported charities like March of Dimes, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, K.I.D.S. and more. Janie and Jack clothes are well-made (with many hand-stitched or embroidered elements), and they are built to last. On the whole, we give this brand 4 out of 5 stars.
