The parent company was founded in 1976 as Gymboree Play & Music. After running its kids' music and activity centers for a decade, the company expanded and opened its first Gymboree store to sell children's apparel. Today, the company owns and operates more the 1200 retail stores worldwide under the Gymboree, Gymboree Outlet, Janie and Jack, and Crazy 8 brands. It also continues to run developmental play programs for kids and their parents at more than 600 Gymboree Play & Music locations in more than 30 different countries.
