Imps & Elfs
Started in 1997, Imps & Elfs is a Dutch company that manufactures clothes for babies, toddlers, and kids. Founders Fons Cohen and Jacqueline Streng sought to create a modest children's label without any of the "frills and frippery" that they felt were becoming the hallmark of clothes for little ones. Rather than the brand's styles standing out on their own, the designers hope to accentuate the unique beauty of each individual child that wears them. Imps & Elfs tries to make sure that the characteristics of kids--including their build, personality, and imagination--are all complemented by wearing these clothes. While styles might look plain on a hanger, their unique cuts ensure that they come to life when they are worn.
All the company's clothes are made with organic cotton, and the brand guarantees that it never uses child labor in its manufacturing processes. Soft, comfortable fabrics are available in a wide variety of styles and colors, and an emphasis is made on earth tones. Today, Imps & Elfs has its main office and design studio in Amsterdam, but it has also expanded to locations in London, Paris, Milan, Antwerp, and New York.
The collections from Imps & Elfs are divided into lines for babies and kids of each gender. Baby products actually cover the range from newborns to 4-year-olds. Options include onesies, rompers, bodysuits, t-shirts, playsuits, sweatpants, leggings, jumpsuits, and more. Designs are subtle, and many incorporate stripes and/or cute English phrases. Moving into clothes for older kids, the hallmarks of the collection are Imps & Elfs' seasonal lines of jeans. New washes are introduced several times every year, and sizes run the gamut from 92 to 164 (which translates to toddler size 2 up to child size 14 in the U.S.). In addition to jeans, the company also makes vests, sweaters, skirts, jackets, dresses, short-sleeved and long-sleeved tees, and many more products. New color palettes and designs are chosen seasonally. Imps & Elfs maintains the opinion that there aren't very many differences between clothes for boys and those for girls, so many of the items they offer for both older and younger kids are actually unisex.
The mission statement behind Imps & Elfs is actually very refreshing to see as a parent. In an age when so many kids' clothes make use of loud styles and attention-grabbing fashions, the company is committed to making sure that the natural beauty of your youngster isn't overshadowed by the clothes he or she is wearing. Furthermore, since the brand's designers avoid catering to the latest trends, these traditional, functional clothes end up being timeless. The manufacturing initiatives undertaken by Imps & Elfs are enviable as well, especially since the company is so outspoken about making sure that none of the clothes that are going to be worn by children are made by child labor. The commitment to using organic fabrics that are soft and comfortable also helps ensure that your kids are going to love wearing these clothes. We give Imps & Elfs 4.5 out of 5 stars.
