In 1947, entrepreneur Erling Persson opened a women's clothing store in Vasteras, Sweden, which he called Hennes (Swedish for "hers"). The company flourished throughout Scandinavia for the next 20 years, opening more stores in Sweden and expanding to Norway. In 1968, Hennes acquired a hunting and fishing store called Mauritz Widforss. As part of the merger, the company was renamed Hennes & Mauritz--which would later be shortened to simply H&M.

Along with the name change, H&M also started to branch out into men's and children's clothing, and the company became even more popular. After spreading throughout Europe during the latter decades of the 20th century, the first H&M store in the U.S. opened in New York City in the year 2000. Using its newfound international presence, the company struck up collaborations with major designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Jimmy Choo, and many more. In autumn of 2010, the store ventured into the business of maternity clothes for the first time with the introduction of the H&M Mama label.
