What started in 1901 as a men’s sock manufacturing business is now, more than 100 years later one of the largest clothing manufacturers in the world, with presence in more than 25 countries, 51,500 employees and over $4.5 billion in sales.

Hanes was founded by John Wesley Hanes in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The company was initially named Shamrock Mills and changed its name in 1914 to Hanes Hosiery Mills Co.

By 1918, Hanes started manufacturing women’s socks and today Hanes manufactures and distributes bras, sheer hosiery, men’s underwear, children’s underwear, socks, t-shirts, shapewear and many other items of clothing for the whole family around the world.

Hanes apparel is on the market under a wide umbrella of brands including: Champion, Playtex, Flexees, Just My Size, Wonderbra, Gear for Sports, Bali and Maidenform. The company’s international brands include Track N Field, Ritmo, Sol y Oro, Rinbros and Zorba.

What differentiates Hanes from many clothing manufacturers in the market is that the company operates its own manufacturing facilities. 90 percent of the apparel sold and distributed around the world by Hanes is manufactured in the company’s plants or by dedicated contractors. This practice ensures ethical business practices and responsible corporate practices.

To achieve its ambitious goals, the company has used renewable sources of energy such as biomass, hydroelectric and geothermal power. The use of these renewable sources of energy has resulted in significant reductions in energy use, water use and also a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

Hanes also puts an equal amount of emphasis in the fair treatment of its employees worldwide. The company has established a Global Code of Conduct together with Global Standards for Suppliers and adheres to the Fair Labor Association to make sure all its facilities comply with the fair labor laws and regulations.
