The First Moments line of baby clothing is manufactured for exclusive distribution at Kohl's stores. Maxwell Kohl founded a chain of supermarkets known as Kohl's Food Stores in the 1940s and then decided to branch out into more varied products with the launch of the first Kohl's Department Store in 1962. Originally based in Wisconsin, the Kohl's Corporation quickly expanded under the ownership of BATUS, Inc. in the 1970s. The company was bought out by a group of private investors--many of whom were also Kohl's executives--in 1986, and the new owners helped prep the organization to go public.

By the early 2000s, Kohl's had started to develop a strong presence across the country. With almost 1,200 stores in 49 states, the retailer recently claimed the title of the largest department store chain in the U.S., and it is also one of the nation's biggest retail organizations by revenue. Kohl's has always struck a balance between distributing major name brand goods and manufacturing its own house labels, but the retailer has focused more on its private brands over the last decade.
