Founded in 1892 by the Schwarz brothers, F A O Schwarz was initially launched under the name “Toy Bazaar” in Baltimore. As the presence of the stores grew, Frederick August Otto Schwarz used his name’s initials for a newspaper ad campaign and the brand FAO Schwarz was officially established in 1900.
FAO Schwarz is not only the oldest toy store in the United States, it was also one of the first businesses in the country to offer mail order for its clients in 1876.
Frederick August Otto Schwarz wanted to provide one-of-a-kind toys and he also wanted to create a theatrical, unique atmosphere to display its merchandise. The FAO Schwarz iconic flagship store opened its doors in 1931 in New York City where it remained for 55 years.
In 1963 the Schwarz family sold their last shares in the business and over the next decades, the brand would have a variety of owners, beginning with Parents Magazine and Toys”R”Us as the company’s current owner.
Today, FAO Schwarz has a complete assortment of unique toys marketed under the FAO Schwarz brand name. The company’s iconic flagship store in New York City continues to attract and delight millions of visitors a year. The brand is exclusively operated and distributed by Toys”R”Us, Inc.
FAO Schwarz has toys for kids from birth and up. The company has a line of plush animal toys in a variety of sizes from small to large enough to hold a small child. The FAO Schwarz line also offers hand puppets with classic characters like Goldilocks and the 3 bears, Little Red Riding Hood, the Wizard of Oz and Fairy Tale characters.
At the New York flagship store, a variety of customizable toys are available for customers. The Muppet Whatnot Workshop allows kids and adults to customize their own Muppets by choosing from a variety of options of bodies, hair, outfits and facial features.
