Levi Strauss & Co. has been one of the most prominent American clothing manufacturers since it crafted its first pair of blue jeans in 1853. It introduced khaki to the masses in the early 1900s, and began making casual clothes for both women and men by the 1950s. In 1985, Levi Strauss merchandiser Susan Kilgore was traveling in Hong Kong when she came across a new style of "dockers pants" that were growing in popularity in Asia. She brought several pairs back to the U.S., and Levi Strauss introduced its Dockers brand in 1986.
Dockers khakis started to catch on almost immediately as a go-to for men's business casual attire. A year after the brand's launch, it also introduced a women's line. In 1991, Dockers were featured on an episode of Seinfeld, and they reached a new pop culture echelon. The company started to distribute its pants internationally in 1992, which coincided with a meteoric rise in khaki sales across Europe. Dockers went on to reach another new market when it launched in Asia in 2001. To help keep up with the times and branch out a bit, the brand introduced Dockers On-the-Go in 2014--featuring several design changes and technological advancements.
While Dockers continues to focus primarily on its men's collection, you can find plenty of women's apparel in a number of categories. Tops include formal button-down shirts, blouses, and tunics, as well as more casual tees, tanks, camis, and henleys. Pants continue to dominate the brand, and khakis are the most popular Dockers style. Among them, you can find several different cuts--ranging from formal slacks to chinos. Khaki also isn't the only color available, and the brand offers several muted colors in addition to bright colors and patterns.
You won't find any Dockers apparel for young kids, but many boys will fit into men's sizes--especially when they reach their tweens and teens. Men's pants are available in fits like classic, slim, skinny, straight, and athletic. They also feature a variety of different fabrics. Blazers and sports coats are available in designs that match pants, or you can choose among the brand's suits. Button-down shirts sport designs for formal occasions as well as more casual wear, and the brand also offers tees, polos, sweaters, and cardigans for young men to wear on a regular basis. Flat-front shorts help you prepare for warm weather without looking too informal.
Ever since their introduction to American consumers, Dockers pants have been wardrobe staples among men who need to dress in business casual attire. Though the brand has expanded its selection during the last few decades, it hasn't quite broken through that original identity--so it's not quite as well known among women and doesn't cater to kids. Even so, Dockers offers high-quality niche apparel that is perfect for certain situations. Women working office jobs and older boys who need formalwear for school or events will certainly be able to trust that the brand's clothing meets very high standards of quality. We give Dockers 4 stars out of 5.
