Over the last nine decades, the Walt Disney Company has grown into one of the largest entertainment conglomerates in the world. Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse in 1928 before transitioning into feature-length animated films in the late '30s. Disney merchandise started to become popular almost immediately, but the company didn't start its retail division until almost 60 years after Mickey first came onto the scene. The Disney Store chain was founded in 1987, when the first location opened at the Glendale Galleria in Southern California. The retailer quickly became one of Disney's top earners around the world, as it spread across the United States, Europe, and Asia.

In 2004, Disney execs grew frustrated with the growing cost of operating the Disney Store chain, so the company decided to sell its stores to The Children's Place and license out its characters and other properties. Under its new ownership for four years, the brand struggled and floundered. Finally, Disney was forced to buy back the chain from The Children's Place in 2008, and the company quickly went to work redesigning its stores based on a concept spearheaded by Steve Jobs. Today, there are about 500 Disney Stores around the world, and the retailer has reestablished itself as one of the company's top subsidiaries. The Disney Store has also developed a strong online presence by selling its own goods, as well as products from the popular Disney Parks division, on its website.

One of the best parts about the Walt Disney Company is that its line of entertainment offerings is so diverse. The Disney Store and the Disney Consumer Products division that lords over it are well known for creating quality products that feature the company's huge catalog of characters. While the retailer's brief ownership by The Children's Place turned out to be a bit of a dark spell in its history, the division has come back stronger than ever in the last few years. Back under the control of the Disney Company itself, the Disney Store is able to create a wide variety of products for both kids and adults, and its lines are constantly shifting and evolving with the releases of new movies and TV shows.
