The entire concept of the Disney Princess wouldn't have come about without Walt Disney's decision to create the first feature-length animated motion picture in 1937--Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. After the success of Snow White, Disney took a break from traditional fairy tales, but he returned to the genre with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Following Disney's death, 30 years went by without another "princess movie" being produced. Beginning with The Little Mermaid in 1989, however, the Walt Disney Company started a string of successful movies featuring princess characters, which have included Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tangled, and Frozen.
In the late '90s, Andy Mooney was appointed the head of the Disney Consumer Products division. Mooney noticed that Disney wasn't doing much in the way of merchandise to promote its very popular line of princesses, so he pushed for the creation of the Disney Princess brand. Even without focus groups or much advertising, the line of new Disney Princess merchandise became Disney's top seller almost immediately. To protect brand integrity, Disney closely manages how the princesses are allowed to appear and interact with one another on merchandise (so that each movie's individual mythology isn't compromised). Today, the lineup of princesses includes Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, and Merida. Frozen's Anna and Else are likely to be added in the very near future.
The range of products featuring the Disney Princesses is practically all-encompassing, and it includes clothes and accessories for girls of all ages as well as toys, home products, collectibles and more. One of the most popular categories of clothing in the Disney Princess line is costumes that allow little ones to dress up as their favorite princess characters. Since Disney has princesses from all different cultures and with different personalities, it's easy for girls to find the princess to whom they most relate. Costumes also feature almost limitless accessories like crowns, tiaras, jewelry, purses, shoes, and more. Disney Princesses are also featured on everyday clothing articles like graphic tees, sweatshirts, jackets, sleepwear, and dresses.
When it comes to toys, you'll find a wide selection of dolls, plush toys, figurines, and play sets that relate to all the major Disney Princess movies. The princesses themselves are complemented by other memorable characters who are often featured on merchandise as well. It's easy to find home décor items that feature your child's favorite Disney Princess, including kitchenware, bedding, towels, school supplies, and much more.
Disney is easily one of the most recognizable brands in the world, and its Disney Princess division is legendary. As your kids grow up watching and falling in love with the Disney animated films--both old and new--it's only natural that they will want to start stocking up on merchandise that features their favorite character(s). Luckily, the Disney Princess brand makes it easy to find almost any product imaginable from a wide range of retailers. In addition to the products made and sold directly by Disney, you can also find a unique range of licensed Disney Princess products sold at almost every major store. Disney's female characters (especially the more recent additions to the lineup) are mostly strong women with big personalities, and they all have specific traits that make them good role models for young girls. On the whole, we give Disney Princess 5 out of 5 stars.
