Marvin and Helene Gralnick opened a boutique called Chico's Folk Art Specialties on Florida's Sanibel Island in 1983. Though their store mostly sold art at first, a small collection of sweaters quickly became a bestseller, so the duo rebranded their store as a clothing boutique. The Gralnicks slowly expanded their venture locally before starting to franchise the Chico's brand in 1989. The corporation was renamed Chico's FAS (abbreviating "Folk Art Specialties"), and it went public in 1993. With boutiques scattered across the country, the company's popularity skyrocketed--and its earnings followed suit. Chico's FAS acquired other brands like White House | Black Market, Boston Proper, and Soma Intimates.

Chico's continues to be the parent company's top property. The brand's chic designs are unique, fashionable, and comfortable. In addition to its main line, Chico's also sells specialty collections like So Slimming, the luxury Black Label, Zenergy activewear, and Travelers clothes for women on the go. Chico's touts its associates as style experts and relies on its employees to help customers build a coordinated wardrobe. Today, Chico's operates more than 700 boutiques nationwide in addition to maintaining a monthly catalog and e-commerce presence. Chico's FAS is also well-known for its philanthropic endeavors--specifically its support of Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
