Founded in 1919 by Abe and Bill Fainbloom as Knickerbocker Knitting Company, the company known as Champion nowadays was one of the first ones to offer apparel specifically designed for working out.

In fact, the Fainbloom brothers were pioneers in gear and processes and they patented a process that enabled raised lettering to be printed on fabric, which made the company’s products ideal for team sports.

Champion has always been a pioneer in sportswear, it was the first company to introduce the first hooded fleece sweatshirt to keep athletes warm during workouts. In 1940, the company introduced reversible t-shirts for Navy training and in 1977 it introduced the Jogbra.

The company was acquired by the Sara Lee Corporation in 1992 and became the official sponsor and apparel licensee of the Women’s National Basketball Association in 1996 and produced uniforms for other National Basketball Association teams during the 90s.

Today, Champion if a subsidiary of Hanes, which manufactures and sells a wide array of clothing and apparel brands around the world, with 51,000 employees in more than 25 countries around the world. Some of the brands under the Hanes umbrella are: Champion, Playtex, Maidenform, Gear For Sports, Track N Field and Ritmo.
