Hamilton Carhartt founded Hamilton Carhartt & Company in Detroit in 1889. Though the brand had trouble getting off the ground at first, Carhartt polled local railroad workers to find out what they were missing from their workwear, and he struck gold when he created the union-made bib overall. By 1910, the company had outposts across the country and had begun to grow internationally. It continued to primarily focus on work clothing, and its factories were used for sewing military uniforms during both World Wars.

The company barely survived the Great Depression, but it was able to spring back to financial success by the mid-20th century. Carhartt stayed in the family even after the death of its founder, and it opened modern production facilities in the 1970s that allowed products to be distributed via major retailers for the first time. The rugged Carhartt look actually helped create the grunge style in the '80s and continues to be a popular fashion statement today. The brand's clothes also represent the uniform of America's blue-collar workers, and Carhartt takes pride in manufacturing millions of garments in the U.S. each year. The brand also has sponsorship agreements with organizations like the FFA, Helmets to Hardhats, SkillsUSA, the Union Sportsmen's Alliance, and more.
