In 1818, American entrepreneur Henry Sands Brooks opened a clothing store, which he called H & D.H. Brooks & Co., at the corner of Manhattan's Catharine and Cherry Streets. The shop was one of the first in the country to sell ready-to-wear suits, and it catered to prominent upper class Americans including President Abraham Lincoln. After Henry Sands Brooks died in 1833, he passed the family business onto his three sons. They decided to rename the company Brooks Brothers.
The history of Brooks Brothers has continued to mirror American history over the last two centuries. During the Civil War, for instance, it was a prominent manufacturer of uniforms for the Union army. Brooks Brothers has also outfitted 39 of the 44 U.S. Presidents, as well as hundreds of prominent celebrities, socialites, and businesspeople. The company was the first to introduce several iconic clothing items to America, including the button-down polo shirt, Harris Tweed, Shetland sweater, and more. The Brooks family retained control of their brand until 1946, when it was acquired by Julius Garfinckel & Co. Under new ownership, it expanded from its New York headquarters to 10 other prominent locations around the country. Since its final acquisition in 2001 by Retail Brand Alliance, Brooks Brothers has established a major presence both domestically and internationally. The company has more than 200 stores in the United States, and 70 more in other countries. It continues to outfit millions of men, women, and children every year.
Brooks Brothers is famous for its formalwear and prep-style clothes. Its product lines for boys include dress shirts, sport shirts, vests, sweaters, dress trousers, blazers, sport coats, suits, ties, polos, tees, and rugby shirts. For girls, you can find blouses, sweaters, knits, skirts, dresses, pants, and outerwear. The company also manufactures a wide selection of shoes for both genders, including boat shoes, boots, and loafers for boys, and ballet flats, Mary Janes, and riding boots for girls.
Older children and adults can find adult sizes of all the same types of clothing that are available for kids, as well as additions like swimwear, sleepwear, underwear, socks, intimates, and hosiery. Brooks Brothers also makes a range of accessories that includes handbags, scarves, jewelry, sunglasses, hats, fragrance, luggage, briefcases, watches, pocket squares, handkerchiefs, cufflinks, umbrellas, and more. The company's Home line also features collections for bedding, bath, and home décor.
Through the years, Brooks Brothers has always been an innovator when it comes to revolutionizing formalwear. In addition to off-the rack suits, the company is also responsible for popularizing argyles, lightweight summer suits, non-iron dress shirts, and more. As the oldest surviving chain of men's clothiers in the United States, Brooks Brothers has a rich history standing behind it. When you are looking for your child's first suit or formal dress, you can be sure that this brand guarantees impeccable quality and style that has been trusted by some of history's most influential Americans. Brooks Brothers is also committed to being a responsible member of its communities, and it maintains relationships with charities like Make-a-Wish, the American Red Cross, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
