In 1818, American entrepreneur Henry Sands Brooks opened a clothing store, which he called H & D.H. Brooks & Co., at the corner of Manhattan's Catharine and Cherry Streets. The shop was one of the first in the country to sell ready-to-wear suits, and it catered to prominent upper class Americans including President Abraham Lincoln. After Henry Sands Brooks died in 1833, he passed the family business onto his three sons. They decided to rename the company Brooks Brothers.

The history of Brooks Brothers has continued to mirror American history over the last two centuries. During the Civil War, for instance, it was a prominent manufacturer of uniforms for the Union army. Brooks Brothers has also outfitted 39 of the 44 U.S. Presidents, as well as hundreds of prominent celebrities, socialites, and businesspeople. The company was the first to introduce several iconic clothing items to America, including the button-down polo shirt, Harris Tweed, Shetland sweater, and more. The Brooks family retained control of their brand until 1946, when it was acquired by Julius Garfinckel & Co. Under new ownership, it expanded from its New York headquarters to 10 other prominent locations around the country. Since its final acquisition in 2001 by Retail Brand Alliance, Brooks Brothers has established a major presence both domestically and internationally. The company has more than 200 stores in the United States, and 70 more in other countries. It continues to outfit millions of men, women, and children every year.
