In 1948, young entrepreneur Charles Lazarus founded a baby furniture store in Washington, D.C., catering specifically to the influx of new parents at the beginning of the baby boom era. He soon started to stock toys for both babies and older children in response to demand from parents, and he realized that this underrepresented market niche could yield its own larger company. In 1957, Lazarus opened the first Toys "R" Us store with a unique supermarket model. The new location was a major hit, and the brand quickly started to expand. Toys "R" Us had spread across the country by the late '70s and became a publicly traded company in 1978.

With Toys "R" Us established as a market leader in its category, the conglomerate started trying to diversify, and it introduced Kids "R" Us in 1983 and Babies "R" Us in 1996. While the former division has since folded, Babies "R" Us has grown into the nation's leading baby supply chain. More than 250 Babies "R" Us stores are scattered across the U.S., and the retailer offers everything that expectant parents and new parents need in order to start the exciting next phase of their lives.
