Apt. 9 is one of the private brands manufactured for exclusive sale at Kohl's. It was first introduced in 2004 as a line of apparel for men and women, and then it expanded into home goods in 2006. The casual collection features clothing, shoes, and accessories. Maxwell Kohl founded the first Kohl's Department Store in Wisconsin in 1962. After a decade of steady growth, the Kohl's Corporation was bought by holdings firm BATUS, Inc., in 1972. Under new ownership, the chain spread to several other states in the Midwest.
When BATUS began looking to divest itself from Kohl's in the mid 1980s, a group of private investors (including several Kohl's executives) stepped up to buy the company. Just a few years later, the corporation went public in the midst of a massive expansion across the country. Today, Kohl's operates more than 1,200 stores in 49 states. It is one of the biggest department store chains in the U.S. by number of stores, retail sales, and revenue. Kohl's has long carved out a niche for itself by offering products that are slightly more expensive than discount retailers but still cheaper than high-end department stores. The company is constantly balancing its extensive list of exclusive brands like Apt. 9 alongside major name brands.
The women's collection from Apt. 9 is very extensive and includes casualwear for practically any situation. Tops range from basic essentials like camis, tanks, and tees to slightly more formal blouses, tunics, and button-down shirts. The brand also features sweaters, cardigans, sweatshirts, and pullovers. Outerwear options include peacoats, trenches, puffer jackets, anorak jackets, and blazers. Apt. 9 offers a wide selection of bottoms. Trousers and straight-leg pants are perfect choices for wearing to work. The assortment of jeans includes styles like bootcut, capris, boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans and more. You'll also find different styles of shorts in addition to both dressy and casual skirts. Dresses are available in cuts like maxi dresses, sheath dresses, fit-and-flare dresses, and shift dresses--and they can easily be worn for a night out.
Apt. 9 also offers specialty apparel in a number of different categories. Sleepwear options include pajama sets, chemises, lingerie, and loungewear. The brand's intimates collection features bras, bralettes, and panties. You'll also find plenty of swimwear options, such as bikinis, one-piece swimsuits, swimdresses, bandeaukinis, and cover-ups. Apt. 9 shoes include flats, wedges, heels, boots, pumps, and sandals. The brand also features a wide assortment of jewelry and accessories--from necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, to belts, scarves, handbags, and hats.
The laid back styles that define the Apt. 9 brand are very relatable and can be appreciated by the vast majority of consumers. Unlike some other exclusive brands, this line never tries to be too trendy or too conservative--instead, it manages to always be stylish without going overboard. One reason why Apt. 9 is especially popular is because it features extensive collections of petite and plus-sized apparel in addition to regular sizes. By appealing to women with all different body types, the brand comes across as especially accessible. Kohl's has an excellent reputation that dates back more than 50 years, and all of the retailer's private brands are held to a standard of high quality. Because Apt. 9 certainly lives up to that standard, we give the brand 4.5 stars out of 5.
