Designed to appeal to career-minded women looking for clothes that can be worn to work and beyond, Alfani is a ready-to-wear line that features clean designs that accentuate the feminine sensibility. It is manufactured exclusively for Macy's, Inc., and it is sold at the company's Macy's and Bloomingdale's department stores.
R.H. Macy & Co. was founded in 1858 when Rowland Hussey Macy moved to New York and opened a dry goods store. Though Macy's previous retail ventures in Massachusetts had all been unsuccessful, this new location proved to be popular almost immediately. The company expanded into other nearby buildings, and it moved uptown to its now-iconic flagship location on 34th Street in 1902. Macy's was cautious and calculating when it came to expansion over the next several decades. The company set up stores in a few major markets across the country, but it wasn't until Macy's merged with Federated Department Stores in 1994 that it really began to grow in a major way. Acquisitions of A&S Department Stores and May Department Stores led to the rebranding of hundreds of retail locations as Macy's stores. Today, Macy's, Inc. operates almost 800 stores under the Macy's masthead in addition to about 50 Bloomingdale's locations. The chains are both well-known for stocking high-quality house brands like Alfani in addition to name brand apparel.
Alfani women's tops generally feature bold patterns adorning relatively conservative cuts. Options like tunics, blouses, scoop-necks, blousons, polos, and sweaters are certainly modest and semi-formal enough to wear to work, but they feature pops of color and abstract designs that make it easy for you to show off your personality. Dresses are available in popular styles like shift dresses, A-line dresses, sheaths, and scuba dresses, and most of them are similarly flashy. Outerwear options are a little more muted and include basic quilted and leather jackets as well as blazers in neutral colors.
Pants from Alfani range from relatively formal slacks to much bolder linen pants, pleated pants, and track pants. They are available in three basic styles--curvy fit, tummy-control skinny, and pull-on capri--so it's easy to find the cut that best suits your figure. The brand specializes in complete outfits that pair tops and bottoms together so that you don't have to try to coordinate on your own. Alfani also has complete petite and plus-sized collections that include all the brand's top styles in sizes that will fit different body types. Beyond everyday apparel, you'll find pajamas, robes, thermals, and other types of loungewear. The brand also makes an assortment of shoes, including sandals, flats, boots, booties, pumps, wedges, and more.
Many women tend to feel constrained when their jobs require them to wear more conservative clothes, but Alfani strives to add plenty of flair to these classic styles. For some people, the patterns and colors featured on most Alfani tops and dresses might be a little too bold, but others will love being able to show off their sense of style while still clearly being dressed for work. Part of the Alfani mission is to redefine the dress code for career-minded consumers, and these clothes certainly do just that--from head to toe. The brand also does an excellent job catering to women of all shapes and sizes with its options for petite and plus-sized individuals. All things considered, we give Alfani 4 stars out of 5.
