R.H. Macy & Co. was founded in 1858 when Rowland Hussey Macy moved to New York and opened a dry goods store. Though Macy's previous retail ventures in Massachusetts had all been unsuccessful, this new location proved to be popular almost immediately. The company expanded into other nearby buildings, and it moved uptown to its now-iconic flagship location on 34th Street in 1902. Macy's was cautious and calculating when it came to expansion over the next several decades. The company set up stores in a few major markets across the country, but it wasn't until Macy's merged with Federated Department Stores in 1994 that it really began to grow in a major way. Acquisitions of A&S Department Stores and May Department Stores led to the rebranding of hundreds of retail locations as Macy's stores. Today, Macy's, Inc. operates almost 800 stores under the Macy's masthead in addition to about 50 Bloomingdale's locations. The chains are both well-known for stocking high-quality house brands like Alfani in addition to name brand apparel.
