Founded as a German company called Gebruder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) in 1924, the brand that would eventually become Adidas manufactured shoes that helped lead several athletes to gold medals at the Olympics. After World War II, the Dassler brothers--Adi and Rudolph--split their business after a personal rift drove them apart. Rudolph would go on to found Puma, while Adi rebranded his share of the business as Adidas.

After essentially starting over with his new company, Dassler innovated the future of soccer cleats by introducing shoes with screw-in studs on the bottoms of them for the 1954 World Cup final. Now that it was established as a major sports brand, demand for Adidas skyrocketed, and the company soon went international. As Adidas grew, it diversifies to provide apparel and equipment for a number of sports, including tennis, running, cricket, basketball, lacrosse, rugby, baseball, and more. The company almost went under after the Dassler family exited in the late 1980s, but a major rebranding in the '90s put Adidas back on top. The three-bar Adidas logo has become synonymous today with quality athletic apparel and supplies. The brand is the second-largest manufacturer of sportswear in the world.
